Canceled our Summer Trip

April 27th, 2020 at 12:19 am

We were supposed to be leaving on May 29th for Europe; even if things open up we all decided that we did not want to be on a plane, or traveling, or far from home. So we canceled our summer trip, and I'm super sad.

The good news is that we are not out any money.

- Plane tickets - United put the miles back in my mom's account (she gave us the miles) and also is crediting our credit card for taxes/fees. This was a straight cancel, not rebook or delay. I am super thankful to United, and we will fly with them again hopefully next summer.

- AirBnb - We had paid half, and while we don't get the money back, it is on account with AirBnb to use any time before December 2021.

- Travel Insurance - Travelguard said we can apply our insurance from this trip to a future trip, so next trip is paid for.

The only thing that hasn't been returned are the theater tickets. We were going to see Wicked for my daughter's 15th birthday (she is super sad, I am trying to work something out for her birthday) and they haven't canceled those shows yet. Pretty sure they will, and they said that if so they will refund our money. Again, hopefully next year.

Have you canceled summer trips?

Aw I’m sorry, I’m glad you weren’t out any money.

Our trip south for FIL's celebration of life event is off. When he died in January, they tentatively scheduled the event for the summer so we could attend. But in hindsight that wasn't the best move. I don't think the family will end up doing anything.

My girlfriends and I were planning a girlfriend weekend getaway in May -- that won't happen! We are tentatively planning on next year instead. And my trip to Oregon to see my son in his new house is on hold.

BFF lost her brother in the fall, I believe. She wanted to have a celebration of life event but her other brothers were not available due to various other family crises and obligations. I convinced her that she should wait for her brothers -- but then came the pandemic, so it looks like nothing is going to take place. I was probably in the wrong to tell her to wait, but I didn't know what was coming.

I am glad you're not out money, but its definitely sad to be cancelling plans. We were to go to Florida in September, but already put that off because of possible school closings/tele school as our kiddo would be starting Kindergarten. (It was an adult only long weekend). We also cancelled beach plans in March and birthday plans this week to go away.

I am hoping we will be able to maybe rent a cabin or something once things have calmed down. If we still 'isolate' in a cabin somewhere or go camping, but not be at home, it would at least be some sort of 'vacation'. I will take it!

We were supposed to be going to the UK in July, and like you do not want to travel this year even if international travel opens again. We don’t have insurance though and our flight tickets are non-refundable so the only way we can get our money back is if the world travel advisories extend the world do not travel from 31 May to 31 July (this is what our internet travel provider has advised us). We just have to keep calling them regularly to check on this.

It's sure disappointing, isn't it? Glad you didn't lose money and hope you can enjoy your trip later on.
