Vet Bill

September 26th, 2013 at 02:56 am

Our dog came in the other night with a bloody foot - traumatic! It was obviously really painful, and I tried to wash it gently to figure out what was wrong. After I got it cleaned up, I noticed a really raw spot and slathered some neosporin on that.

I took her to the vet the next morning because I was afraid of infection. It turns out her dew claw got caught on something and was pulled completely off (ewww!).

The good news: it came off completely which meant no procedures were necessary.

The bad news: $95 vet bill (which included the antibiotics and pain medication and office visit).

The other good news: we have budgeted for things like this, so it doesn't break our budget.

The other, other good news: our dog is feeling much better, not limping anymore.

The question: is pet insurance a good idea? Do any of you have it? Is it worth it? Is it expensive?

I guess pet insurance could be a good idea, especially if you let your dog roam on its own? I wouldn't recommend that, though. I used to let my cats run free and one of them never came home; I went looking and calling for her and found her hunkered down on the floor of a neighbor's tool shed. The glass window was broken and her belly was slit open. She probably went thru the window trying to escape from something....like a dog.

She would have died in that shed if I hadn't found her. I had to get a laundry basket and as quickly as possible to minimize her agony, put her in it and bring her to the vet.

She doesn't roam around and was just in our yard - but it's a pretty rugged yard (cacti and an arroyo)... so maybe a good idea... I'm going to look into it and see how much it costs. When our last cat got very old we spent a fortune on him! (Wonder if it would take care of those costs or it's better to self-insure?)

It sounds wonderful, but I'd be careful what it covers.

Right now, I budget for shots for my 4 rescue dogs, and yes - i have spent large amounts of money on them in emergencies or in the case of boo-boo's.

However, I find most of the vets in our area are very overpriced (vets to the rich and famous). I have to drive 20 miles to go to animal Samaritans (good folk!) or a little vets by the air port. If those two services offered pet insurance, I might consider it, but they don't seem to.

I'm so glad you got your dog to the vet and it was ok. I've had mine do exactly the same thing. I also had my Itty and Bitty (who passed on several years ago) run into a bunch of cacti chasing a lizard. I have only one word for that situation - pliers.

Someone last night just told me about a vet he loves - a little farther away, a lot cheaper and the vet is a really wonderful woman... I think are vets are "rich and famous" vets, too...
