Some Mortgage Progress, and are you watching/reading anything for free?

February 20th, 2017 at 12:08 am

A few things to report:

- I sold an old coat at consignment back in January; I was able to pick up the payment a couple of days ago. That's another $38 toward mortgage principal.

- Our mortgage payment went down (for escrow; I have no idea how they calculate that), but we left it the same. And extra $5.21 toward principal each month.

- Our team bought the basketball coach and assistant coach gift certificates (we got a certificate for the local bike shop which is owned by a mutual friend for the coach - who shops there a lot! - and starbucks for the assistant). The bike shop is next to one grocery store I go to, and the starbucks is next to the other; as you can tell, I bought the certificates. One of the moms said she'd give me her share at the party last night. She didn't and I was freaking out that I'd have to cover her, but she emailed and apologized and said she'd bring it to school on Tuesday. Phew!

- Got a new book (free, epub book of course) - the first in the Chronicles of St. Mary's series. I'm a couple of chapters in, and I like it so far. A time travel book.

- Dinner tonight is a socca (chickpea flour and courgette pancake with red onion topping).

- We owe $14,636 on the mortgage.

- I am watching Just Add Magic with F on Amazon Prime. It's a really cute show, if you have a tween, I recommend it. I like it too, but I'm sort of immature.

Are you reading or watching anything for free right now?

We watched The Code on Netflix. Do you ever read the NYT Friday feature "Watching"? I've found some interesting things from those recs. https://www.nytimes.com/watching

I'm reading books from the library. I just finished Good and Cheap: How to Eat Well on $4/Day by Leanne Brown and Torment by Lauren Kate in her Fallen series (which was unevenly plotted, but the ending makes me want to read the next one, which is what happened with the book before it, too), and I am about to start the last book in the Cedar Cover series by Debbie Macomber. And I watch free content on youtube all the time.

I haven't seen the NYT "Watching" but I do look at the Guardian's "Watch This" - get lots of ideas there!
I'm going to look for good and cheap - it reminds me of a blog post I wanted to do...
My daughter watches most of her content on YouTube - she likes to watch miscellaneous scenes from the Harry Potter movies. Also watches Emma Watson giving speeches in front of the UN a lot.
The library is seriously the best, except when I somehow find a book and they don't have it; our small library system seems to have very few of the books I love.
And for Frugal Texan - some of my favorite books recently if you haven't read them: The Watchmaker of Filigree St. (not really time travel, but it's set in the past but with some seriously cool stuff that was like magic) and the Night Circus (also not time travel, but also with a lot of the fantasy element). And the entire Rivers of London series (which is hard to describe, but it isn't giving away too much to say that there is a division of wizards in the London police dept.).

With Roku/Amazon Prime, I like to watch one show every night til I'm done with all the seasons, becus otherwise I lose track of what's going on in any one show. So now I'm watching a whole lot of old episodes of Forensic Files.

Ironically, the very first episode in the very first season was about the infamous woodchipper murder that took place in my town.

If you can recommend any shows, I'd be glad to hear it. I've watched some excellent Amazon-produced shows including Hand of God and Boardwalk Empires, both really, really good.

Most of the books and magazines I check out of our library. I just finished a murder mystery set in Wales. I happened upon a magazine I never noticed before called "Yes." It contained some interesting articles, one of which was about one's health and how being unhappy and/or stressed can cause your body to become even more ill. The article stated that Lou Gehrig worked through illness and pain and perhaps putting such extreme stress on his body caused him to suffer so much more with ALS in later life.

Thanks Buendia - I haven''t read any of those.
