Ugh - Car Repair

October 1st, 2013 at 08:21 pm

So I got a "service engine soon" light on my car's dashboard, and took the car in today. They called to tell me it's some part in the fuel gauge that needs to be replaced. The part is some electronic thing that helps indicate how full/empty the tank is. They want $721 (gasp!) for the part/installation.

Now I have to decide if they should order it or if I just keep track of the mileage and fill the car up based on that. (I know how many miles I get on a tank of gas and could be really conservative with fill-ups).

What do you think?

I did the mileage thing for a while before. It is a pain, but definately do-able. I guess it just depends on whether you have the extra money to pay for it right now.

This reminds me - I think my spouse has had two cars with broken sensors.

I'd just live without. I am already in the habit of setting the trip meter at every fillup. Just do that - fill up every x miles - easy peasy. (I think my spouse is in the habit out of necessity, and I am just in the habit because you know, guages can break).

I also set the trip meter every fill-up already, so I think I'm not going to fix the part... as my mother said "it's diminishing returns" - have to compare the car value to the cost of the repair (since in this case, it's not a necessary repair).
